Mom’s Apple Pie

1-moms-apple-pie-sm

{what next} has released some autumn goodness for the September round of Collabor88. In addition to a pumpkin-filled wheelbarrow (which I haven’t gotten around to showing you yet), you can find this cookbook and holder, along with two perfectly baked pies. When I saw the apple version, it brought a smile to my face. It reminded me so much of the ones my Mom used to make; she even used the lattice top crust.

The only difference is that Mom didn’t use a recipe, yet her apple pie always turned out perfectly. I think that’s because her main ingredient was love.

I haven’t made one in quite some time, but I, too, follow Mom’s rough rules for pie-making: adjust the sugar, depending on the sweetness of the apples, add a bit of flour to the sugar mixture to thicken the juice and keep the crust from getting soggy, make sure you add cinnamon to taste. I never quite got the hang of making the lattice as pretty as Mom did, but I’m pretty sure she passed along her knack for turning a few autumn apples into a delicious delight, guaranteed to warm your tummy and your heart.

All that’s missing is a scoop of ice cream…and Mom’s smile.

Pretty stuff I’m showing off:
