I have never been a big believer in Valentine’s Day. It is a commercialised holiday, designed to guilt people into becoming consumers in the name of love. When I was married, I always told my husband to forego the flowers on February 14th and wait until the 15th, when he could get twice as many for half the cost. Or better yet, spring them on me on March 3rd…or July 9th…or September 23rd; just whenever he felt like buying me flowers for no reason. Now that I carry the Single status, I can consider VD just another day. And I like that.

But that doesn’t mean that over the years I haven’t received a Valentine or two: the flowers, jewelry, chocolates in boxes that are pretty enough to keep, even a love letter or two. Those little mementos of times when a significant other defied my request and presented me with a single rose, a necklace, a box of chocolates, a note with a few heart-felt words scribbled in his best penmanship.

Those things are all gone now. But the memory of them conjures up the Ghost of Valentine’s Days Past to haunt me for a few days each February. The gifts from those relationships, either fleeting or sustained, are a reminder that I have been loved.

It is a haunting always welcomed, then forgotten very quickly as the days pass by.

Gulp.

Yes, I realise this photo is a bit more risque than I normally publish on my blog, but I really wanted to find a way to showcase this harness from Salt & Pepper for the upcoming round of ROMP. It is very delicate and pretty and if you are the harness-wearing type, you really must have it.

This isn’t the shot I originally intended. It started out as just me, the rug and the tree. However, after some very careful pose editing and creative camera angling to cover my bits, I realised I needed to move the rug. Unfortunately, when I attempted to do that, it moved me (silly woman! I should have used my LUMIPro pose stand before editing my pose!). That meant I had to bring in Chance to move stuff for me. But once I had the rug and tree in the right location, I noticed I had a lot of negative space in the left side of the photo. I still had the Apple Fall wall on my platform from my shoot yesterday, so I had him drag it over to fill the space. That’s when I decided to stick him in the doorway and include him in the photo. I did a bit more editing of my head position (throwing it back), tossed on my LeLutka head, closed my eyes, opened my mouth and I transformed what was originally a rather PG photo into the R-rated version you see here.

I think having a male alt brings out the voyeuristic side of me.

Gulp. Again.

Contemplation

1 Contemplation

I am not making any new year resolutions. I haven’t in several years. If I need to make a change in my life, I will do it when I am motivated personally; not by the turning of the calendar page.

That doesn’t stop me from taking some time for contemplation. I have a couple of weeks off work, so the downtime is conducive to evaluation. Through the rest of the year, I’ve rarely had more than a long weekend, so some quiet time is nice. It also allows me to think about more than just commuting, working and preparing for the next work week.

I am only four days in, and already I am feeling a bit at loose ends. The flurry of holiday prep and deadlines are over, as is the latest flurry of blogging commitments I have had. It is a bit of a luxury to be able to do whatever I choose to do without a sense of obligation, in both worlds.
