1 Autumn Burst

A typical October day…you head out, expecting cool temperatures and a chance of rain, only to be caught in a burst of autumn sunshine. Layers and a stylish hat are fashion musts during this season.

Between JfL Real Hats and (Milk Motion), I’m covered. The hat is one of Johnfrancis’ two latest releases (there is a plain version, along with the patterned chapeau I’m wearing) and the sweater and skirt can be found at this month’s round of Collabor88. Only two days into this monthly event and I’ve managed to get in twice; once, to shop and the other when I accidentally hit TP instead of copying the SLurl from the map. Never fear – I left quickly to make room for those waiting to get in!

Get dressed, get out, and enjoy this world of October.

Spring Forward, Fall Back

It is the time of year when those of us who follow Daylight Savings Time start changing our clocks. Here in Australia, we did it this weekend. I, of course, forgot. Because it is our spring, that means moving the clock forward an hour. Yet after over 14 years in Australia, October still feels like it should be autumn.

The fall months have always been my favourite. The gradually cooling temperatures, the crisp and riotous colours of the changing leaves and the promise of longer nights to snuggle down into soft, comforting blankets are special moments of the season to me. It is a time of transition that speaks not of an ending, but of a beginning of seasonal festivities to be shared with friends and loved ones.

Here in Australia, that is all turned on its head. October brings springtime, new growth and bounteous blossoms, but also a rise of allergic reactions. I have already abandoned my woolly nightshirts for tee-shirts and open windows as I try to find a cool spot on the pillow when I lie down to sleep. When I dream, it is of bonfires, hay rides and mulled cider around an open fire. When I awake, it is to covers tossed to the floor and a sheen of perspiration on my face. As my body adjusts to the time change, the morning light that awoke me just a few days ago is still an hour away when the alarm jars me from my seasonal dreams.

At least in Second Life I can recreate the season, falling back on my midwestern memories of oranges, golds and red. Of the walks through a meadow, glorying in the magical glow that only comes from an autumnal sunset.

Long Weekend Blues

1 Head Cold

October brings the first long weekend in my part of the world for the first time since June. Normally, that would be a reason to celebrate. Instead, I’m fighting a cold.

It’s nice to have the extra day to recuperate, but I would much rather be spending my time in other ways.

Thankfully, Kuro & Consignment have combined to create these marvelous bedroom accessories for The Candy Fair so I can at least recover in style. The bed, side tables, trunk and lamp can all be purchased directly, while the tissues, chocolates, slippers (both pairs) and laptop are part of their gacha offering. I admit that the detail of all of these items perked me up – from the beautifully embroidered “His” and “Hers” on the slippers, to the blankets that you can arrange from neatly made to various levels of messiness to the fact you can watch movies on the laptop (which is naturally made of warm, as the cat will attest). I actually believe that the tissues are the aloe vera type and not the cheap, wood-chips-against-your-nose variety.

I guess if I’m going to be sick for the long weekend I should be happy I can do it in style.
