Pics by Peep

I really do love close ups. There are a lot of reasons why. When I am shooting client photos, I do a few full-body shots, but my main focus is on the face. I tend to do bust shots rather than straight headshots, but they are still closeups of my subject.

Wanna know why? Jump past the cut, and I’ll tell you!

I mainly do client photos for profiles. When I look at someone’s profile, I want to see their face. I have made it no secret that I am not a fan of busy profile shots – I don’t like the ones with a full-length shot of the avatar superimposed over a fancy background. Yeah, technically I can do those; but if a client wants that kind of profile picture I am going to suggest they go to someone else. That is not my style and I don’t think I can give the client my best work by doing that type of photo. If they come to Pics by Peep, I will concentrate on them, making sure that they are the focus of the picture.

I also love to play with shadows. Yeah, shadows work with full body shots, but I think they give the face more character and mood. They give life to a bunch of pixels on a screen. And this is best seen in a close up.

Perhaps the saying, “The eyes are the window to the soul” is a cliche, but I have always said that a cliche is a cliche because it is true. Most people are drawn to the eyes – even with cartoon characters. The position, lighting and even the pose can help convey a story through the eyes in a portrait. One of my favourite type of photos is one of just the eyes; I used to have that kind of picture as the banner on my Flickr page (recently changed, just because I don’t think I did it well enough). But I will always give a second look to that particular type of shot.

Oh, who am I kidding? The reason I prefer close ups is because I am lazy. I don’t have to worry about finding the perfectly-matching shoes or even shave my legs for a close up 😉

Yep, that’s how I actually looked when I took the lead photo. There you have it; a secret view into the life of a lazy photographer!
