And The Sunlight Plays In the Shadows

Poetry is an echo, asking a shadow to dance.
~ Carl Sandburg

Shadows. The play of darkness on light. It gives a realism to Second Life photography that isn’t always – or easily – captured.

Because I work in a two-dimensional medium (a game or graphic representation of life), shadows are created artificially. Sometimes they are a texture that is added to a building or a setting. In other cases, they are created by the Windlight settings we select. For those unfamiliar with Second Life (or even those who are, but live in the standard Second Life day/night cycle), Windlight is the ability to create lighting and atmosphere settings. You can change the sky, the position of the sun, the clouds, and even the water. This is not a tutorial on how to create or even use Windlight; but it is a tool that allows the inhabitants of Second Life to create a mood for a particular setting.

When I am doing a photo shoot, I will cycle through a variety of Windlight settings, often taking multiple shots of the same pose, in the same position, just to derive a different quality in the picture. Sometimes they work; sometimes they don’t. As any photographer knows, often what you envision in your mind’s eye doesn’t translate to the image that is produced.

This photo is one that I took utilising the artificial shadows incorporated into the build. The play of the light and dark gives this shot a different feel than if it was taken without the shadows.

And this photo, using the same pose but adding a Windlight setting that incorporates shadows, gives the image more realism (well, except for the duck on my shoulder 😉 )

And the sun comes out, with lightness balancing the dark, to play hide and seek with shadows.

In The Sea I See Myself

I have seen the sea when it is stormy and wild; when it is quiet and serene; when it is dark and moody. And in all its moods, I see myself.
~ Martin Buxbaum

Creating a profile picture, for me, is about creating a mood. Even though people are more disposed to being happy or sad, we all go through different moods. None of us is one-dimensional; we have many facets, although we often don’t show them to those around us. I change my profile picture often – it reflects who I am at that moment in time.

A lot of my profile pictures may seem to be sadder than I really am. That is largely because, in my opinion, the smile animations in Second Life look…well, a little goofy 😀 This photograph, for instance, elicited a comment from a friend of, “Aw, Peep, tell me your troubles.”

In fact, when I took the photo, I was trying to portray deep thought. I wasn’t sad, but I was immersed in my own world at the time. I guess I fell a little short with that one.

Another picture I took was to show the carefree, playful side of me. This one, I believe, hit the mark.

This one hasn’t made my profile (yet) but it’s a photo I took for my Second Life boyfriend. I think it shows more than one mood – longing, lightness, joy. All things I feel for him.

The sea is not just stormy, quiet or dark. It is also the playground of dolphins and whales, the waves dancing beneath the breeze.

I am all of these…and more.

A Unicorn Followed Me Home…

…and I fell in love ♥

Actually, I found him at a sales event called Introducing Genre, the .la petite mort. unicorn prop. And I knew I had to photograph him.

One of my favourite things to do is to take the same image and apply different effects. Each photograph based on the same original shot can show a different mood or side of the person I’m photographing. That’s what I did with this shot of myself and my new friend, Percival (yeah, I named my unicorn 😉 )

Even a change in how the shot is cropped can affect the mood and focus of the photo:

I wanted each shot to have an ethereal feel to it, mystical, magical, romantic. I hope I captured those moods.

A short post, but I need to run. Percival has wandered into the neighbour’s garden and I think he’s eating the petunias!
