Strike A Pose Challenge: My Heros

1 aDORKable Rug Burn

I am really pleased that this week Miss Berry chose to do a pose meme. Before I started blogging myself, I often read other blogs and would scour the credits for the name of the pose, or at least the posemaker. Sadly, more times than not, the information was left out. So when I started crediting my posts, I made sure I included the pose.

Posemakers really are my Second Life heros, especially the ones that make posing look natural. I discovered, recently, when I made my first pose that it isn’t that easy to do! It is available free in my marketplace store and quite a few people have grabbed it. I haven’t gotten any reviews on it yet, but I hope that the folks who use it enjoy it. While I made one more for a post, I can’t see me entering the posemaking business anytime soon!

Ah, but this isn’t about me; it is about my favourite posemakers. Here is what Miss Berry has asked us to do:

Meme Instructions: Share a picture of your favorite pose or a list of your favorite posemakers on the grid! Don’t forget to leave a link to your post in the comments (of this post) and share your picture in the blog memes flickr group.

My photo isn’t necessarily my favourite pose, but it is by my favourite posemaker. Time after time I find myself turning to aDORKable Poses by Adorkable Peapod when I am shooting. Sadly, this store is closed in world, but a lot of the poses are still available on Marketplace. I have so many that I can’t put all of my single poses in a single HUD. Occasionally, Adorkable will put out a set of poses for an event and I am always first in line to snatch them up. I do miss her quirky yet natural style.

I have done recent posts on two other of my favourite posemakers. First is Eternal Dream Poses by Fata Boa. I love Eternal Dream Poses for the same reason I love aDORKable – the poses are natural, joints aren’t contorted and they are the types of poses I use every day. You can visit the Eternal Dream Poses Mainstore to see what I mean.

For couple’s poses, my new favourite is Kuro in Motion by Luana Dawg. I do use a lot of Exposeur poses for my couples shots, but what I love about Luana’s poses is that each one works equally well for full-body shots and closeups. If you visit the Kuro in Motion store, you can see this in practice with the vendor ads. Bodies are positioned so that once you have done a wide shot you can just zoom in your camera and shoot the close shots. This is especially helpful with couples if you use pose balls, as adjusting those suckers can be a real pain!

Receiving Honourable Mentions are !bang by Luna Jubilee, oOo Studio Poses by Olaenka Chesnokov and another retired posemaker, Katey Coppola who still has her GLITTERATI poses available on Marketplace.

One last note: if you visit Pose Fair this year, make sure you stop by Kuro in Motion to see Luana’s “Shattered…” pose. I have made three attempts at shooting this pose with the mirrored image – the last today, in hopes of using it for this post – and I have failed miserably each time. Don’t let that discourage you, though. I believe I have gotten too ambitious with my sets and unfortunately, I have ended up with “Objects in mirror are closer than they appear” images or funhouse mirror shots. Keep checking back, though…I’m going to do it if it kills me!

Flat Ebbe Linden Meme: A Walk In The Park

1 Flat Ebbe

By far, one of my favourite memes I have completed was the Flat Rodvik Meme. I laughed so hard while I was doing the photos for it, largely because Rod just looked so…ok, I’ll say it – GOOFY! Ebbe, on the other hand, is handsome and stylish. I have no doubt when the new stock avatar he is sporting is released it will be a popular one. But because he looked so much better, I felt guilty about doing to him what I did to poor Rod. No wonder he resigned; I nearly drowned the poor man!

Now that Linden Labs has a new CEO, of course Miss Berry had to do a new “Flat CEO” meme. I have no doubt she has been stalking him simply so she could do another meme 😉 It is a little different this time around, so here is a rundown of the instructions:

Meme instructions: Pick up a copy of Flat Ebbe Linden from my marketplace store for free and take him to one of your favorite places on the grid. Also, share at least three things that you’d like to tell Ebbe. Please remember to leave a link to your post in the comments (of this post) and share your Flat Ebbe picture in the Blog memes flickr group.

I decided to take Flat Ebbe to my favourite place in Second Life: Calas Galadhon Park. But I had a bit of an agenda in addition to just showing him the sights. And that is one of the three things I want to share with Ebbe.

Advice For Second Life Newbies Challenge: Common Sense

1 Advice to Noobies Meme

I’m taking a break from my alphabetical obsession to do another one – Berry’s Monday Meme. I have been trying desperately to keep ahead on photos for the Inventory Alphabet challenge and stopped to set up for a picture to go with this post that wouldn’t take away from my A-B-C’s. I’m already being spelling-challenged, having ended up somehow with two H’s and two I’s, with one of the I’s working for P which I have already shot. It just seemed simpler to take an all new photo so I don’t accidentally end up getting even more letters out of order!

Miss Berry has asked us this week to give advice to new SLifers. I really had to stop and think about this. The suggestions she gave are very good and rather comprehensive. So I took up a thoughtful pose, put on my thinking boots and I will do my best not to repeat her words of wisdom.

Here’s what she has asked us to do:

Meme Instructions: List 5 pieces of advice you would give to a newcomer that has just joined Second Life. Don’t forget to leave a link to your post or advice in the comments (in this post).

1. Take some time to learn to navigate. Having worked in clubs almost as long as I have been in SL, I have to say that one of the most annoying things a newbie can do is walk onto a crowded dance floor and start knocking people around. I don’t think most people do this on purpose; I think it is mainly because they haven’t gotten the hang of how to move around. When you land on the Island, navigate around, walking, running and flying. Learn where your controls are and how to use them. Then, when you get out into the wide world, try to find an unpopulated area to practice movement. You WILL bump into people from time to time; we all still do occasionally. But if it happens, apologise and move away as smoothly and quickly as possible.

2. Fill out your profile. At first, you probably won’t have a photograph to include, unless you have imported something, but take a few minutes to type a bit about yourself on the Second Life tab of your profile. You will probably change it within a few weeks or even days of landing, but it gives people an idea of your interests. It also will prevent people from assuming you are a bot or a griefer. And that leads me to my next bit of advice…

3. Read people’s profiles. You can pick up a lot of tips from reading profiles. If you see someone whose style you admire, check their groups and picks. Often you can find the names of stores from this resource and even a ride to their shop. It also helps to know a little bit about a person before you start a conversation with them. Don’t flirt with someone who is partnered or states in their profile that they have a boyfriend/girlfriend. You can also get an idea of places to go and things to do. It’s like a mini tour map for you!

4. If you are in a club, don’t go on stage with the DJ/host/dancers! I really don’t know what it is about a stage in a club that is a magnet for newbies. At one club where I worked it was so common that we were provided with a gesture that said “Stage is for staff only!” in about seven languages. This didn’t just happen with griefers or troublemakers; I often had a side bet with my DJ or host on how long it would take before we had company on stage when a newbie entered the club.

5. Use common sense. If you are unsure of how to behave…ask. If you are given tips on how to act, where to shop or what venue to visit…listen. If you are offered an inventory item by someone you don’t know…be wary. There are a lot of helpful people in Second Life, but there are also quite a lot of people who want to either embarrass you by giving you a giant humping bunny cleverly named “A Rose For You” or worse – a griefing device. And there are those who will take advantage of you. So use common sense. If it sounds suspicious, it probably is.

I hope these suggestions are helpful. Maybe I should add a sixth: READ BLOGS! Otherwise, how are we going to get this info out there where it can do some good?

I’ll be heading back into my jumble of an alphabet now…I have no idea what the H I’m going to use tomorrow!
