The Sound of Maddness

Yes, I know “Maddness” is misspelled in the title. But that’s because my sister, Maddie, spells it that way as her tagline when she DJ’s. That’s just one thing that sets Maddie apart, makes her special and so very amazing. She curses like a longshoreman, she’s a staunch animal rights advocate (particularly for pitbulls), and she’s fiercely protective of her family and friends. She is vocal when she believes in a cause, but she’s respectful of other people’s opinions. That is, unless she’s dealing with a dipshidiot (her word of the day 😉 )

Maddie and I have taken a LOT of photographs together – of the two of us when we were working or playing, for holidays, with our family, or just for fun. But recently, after deciding to go back to DJing in Second Life, she asked me to update her profile and DJ pictures. She wanted to include the Parental Advisory – quite appropriate for her! But I also wanted to show Maddie as I know her…bright, beautiful and bold.

I also wanted to depict Maddie emerging from the clouds of a recent break up, finding herself again in her music and redefining her life. I think this is my favourite of all of the photos I did.

But there’s also the softer side of Maddie. The one who nurtures her family and loves all animals (spiders and gigantic moths excluded). The girl who dresses casually, yet always manages to be feminine. The sister who has been my confidante and always brightens my day.

(I must give credit on this photo to my boyfriend. I had shown him two previous versions and he suggested I combine the two. It wasn’t something I had done before, but it was exactly what the photo needed. And he, Maddie and I all loved the result 🙂 ).

Maddison Haven Serrta – my *$@# Maddi(e). My sister and friend.

The Purple-Haired Pixie

Feisty. Playful. Just a little naughty. A bacon-loving, shoe-fanatical, shopping-crazed, music cover-addicted, purple-haired pixie. That’s Hope Seranade. An Irish fireball with a giggle to make your heart sing. She’s one hell of a DJ and and even better friend.

My favourite internet meme is one that says “I’m pretty sure I was supposed to be a princess. No, seriously. Someone needs to fix this.” I laugh at it, but think, yeah, I’m pretty sure I was. And I think that about Hope, too.

When Hope asked me to do her photographs, I had a lot of choices for how I wanted to portray her. I decided to forgo the bacon 😀 , but I had to include the shoes! And I dragged out a pose prop I bought on impulse, but didn’t really think I’d ever use. (Hey, it was on sale – something Hope would understand!) Instead, when Hope put on her pretty princess dress, I knew it would be the perfect backdrop for her.

But I also wanted to show the “rock chick” side of Hope. The edgy DJ who loves nothing more than to ferret out covers, play new music, mix up the tracks so her audience is always listening…anticipating the next tune. And waiting for that Irish lilt to carry across the airwaves, laughter always underpinning her words. No matter how much Hope may be hurting – physically or emotionally – when she plays music, her spirit soars. And anybody listening in can feel it and take that joyful ride with her.

I work with Hope at Breaking The Rules in Second Life, but she’s more than a boss or coworker; she’s a friend and I’m blessed to have this purple-haired pixie in my life.

Clubbin’

Photography in Second Life isn’t all about the formal, posed sessions. Some of my favourite photos are candid shots that have been taken in various clubs where I have worked and hang out. The thing I love about clubs in Second Life is that you never know what’s going to rez into the club!

From fishes going pook pook…

I’ve worked as a host in a lot of clubs and I’ve had the honour and pleasure of working with some amazing DJs there. Two of my very favourites are DJ Maddie and DJ Dax. I never know what will happen when we’re on stage together!

While you may see things in Second Life clubs you would never see in real life clubs, you can count on hearing good music, having lots of laughs and meeting some amazing people. The reasons we frequent clubs in Second Life are no different than those of people heading to their local bar on a Friday night: to unwind, relax and spend time in the company of friends.

Just hanging out, soaking up the atmosphere, havin’ a good time.
